Books

I (Stephanie) am currently reading Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. As with the other Francine Rivers books I've read, I like it a lot. I love how it's both a great story, and it helps me grow in my faith. I'd highly recommend it. For my ladies small group, we just finished reading Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas. This is a wonderful and unique marriage book that really helps you focus on God's purpose for marriage. The essential question of the book is, what if marriage is meant to make you holier instead of happier? The author proposes that marriage is a wonderful way to become more like Christ, as it places us in a situation of continual accountability and practice of Godly love. He also emphasizes a focus on other instead of self. Male or female, good marriage or bad, I'd strongly recommend this book to married couples. It's guaranteed to change your perspective on marriage. I think we need to fight against our culture to redeem the sacredne...

An Update At Last

Image
Yes, the long awaited, much anticipated, update from the Anderson household has finally come! Oh there shall be much dancing, singing and rejoicing in the streets tonight! Anyway. Last weekend I (Kevin) went to my parents house at Camp Pendelton. Unfortunatly Steph was working so could not attend. There were a few reasons this was significant. First, this was the last time I will spend the weekend with my parents in Oceanside. My dad is retiring from the Navy and on Monday will begin moving to Erie Penn. where he will take up a job as Chaplain at the VA hospital there. The visit itself was fairly uneventful. Saturday we just watched a lot of football (a very dissapointing day in that regard), and then that night we went to the base theatre and saw Batman: The Dark Knight. I have of course already seen the movie, but my parents had not. Sunday my Dad preached at the base chapel (I wonder if I will ever hear him preach again?), where he gave a sort of farewell sermon. After the service t...

Some Food For Thought on the Anniversary of 9/11

The Terrorists Are Losing By Quin Hillyer Published 9/11/2008 12:08:33 AM Seven years. Zero attacks. And almost zero credit. President George W. Bush deserves better. Seven years ago today, evil men killed 2,998 innocent people in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. They did so in service of an evil ideology. And they were directed by evil, small-souled creatures protected by a rogue state halfway across the world. The creatures called their murderous organization Al-Qaeda, which means "The Base" -- a name appropriate for an organization that serves man's base instincts, for base motives, to achieve base results. At the time, there was every reason to believe that Al-Qaeda would strike again on American soil. There was every reason to believe that even if the free world could track down Base leader Osama bin Laden and pulverize him, the cost in the meantime would be the endurance of more terror -- mechanical, chemical, biological, maybe even nuclear. President Bush said...

Back to School

Kevin started teaching again last week Wednesday. So far, he says it's going well. He's taking the "mean guy" approach with no smiling for the first 2 weeks or so to establish respect, and then hopefully they can have more fun in class. Our Labor Day was very enjoyable. At 7:30 am Kevin and some friends went pond diving for frisbee golf discs at a park, and they found 30 frisbees. He feels it was a huge success, except now he's suffering from itching and a rash. :( After the pond adventure, Nate and Becca Triemstra came over and we had bruch together. I made peach buttermillk pancakes, which were quite tasty. We didn't anything terribly exciting during the middle of the day, but in the evening we did some more entertaining. Our friends Jeff and Carmen came over for Kevin's famous BBQ ribs. We had a great dinner, and had a lot of fun together. Summer vacaton is over. That doesn 't mean a whole lot to me, but it's a big shift for Kevin. We are hoping...

A Happy Anniversary?

Greetings All! First, if you haven't already, check out the last post from when Steph and I visited my parents for the weekend. Some pretty cool stuff there. Alright! So Tuesday the 5 th was Steph and I's second anniversary. We went to Big Bear and spent the night at a bed and breakfast called Knickerbockers. For those who may not be too familiar with Big Bear, it is a lake high up in the mountains that's fairly famous for its skiing but is a fun place any time of the year with plenty of hiking, biking, wildlife and water sports . Below is a picture of Big Bear. The next picture is a picture of the Knickerbocker mansion. This was a rustic cabin built in the 20's by one of the first people to live in Big Bear. He maintained the dam that supplied the orange groves in Redlands with water. After Steph and I arrived and settled into our room, the first adventure we undertook was a mountain biking excursion. The Knickerbocker boarders a national forest, and there wer...

Account of a Weekend

Steph and I went down to my parents place in Oceanside for the weekend because my sister is leaving for Wisconsin on Thursday to go to law school and we wont have a chance to see her again for a while. First thing we did was go to the beach. It was sunny and warm at my parents place, but there was a pretty nasty marine layer at the beach, so it wasn't all that sunny (as you can see). I went in the water for a bit and did some body surfing, but I was the only one to really go in. In case you're curious, that is the pier with Ruby's at the end. Excellent restaurant . My parents took us out for dinner for our anniversary (on the 5 th ...aka tomorrow), and on the way back from the restaurant we stopped at a little automotive museum they had on Camp Pendelton . This place is only about 2 miles from my parents house, but we had never stopped there. It was pretty interesting. Even the girls who didn't really want to stop got rather excited when we found out the hatch was o...
